We Are Movie Geeks top 100 movies …

After the great success of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ post we decided to make a “Top 100 movies of geekdom”. We made all of our guys submit a top 100 movies list and here is what we got when we combined them all… and this is what we got:
Unanimous Votes:
Goodfellas,
A Clockwork Orange,
Empire Strikes Back,
Raiders of the Lost Ark
.
Received 2 or more votes:
300
40 Year Old Virgin
Alien
Aliens
Anchorman
Animal House
Army of Darkness
Back to the Future
Batman
Batman Begins
Big
Big Lebowski

Pirates of the Caribbean Curse
Planet Terror
Psycho
Pulp Fiction
Raging Bull

There Will Be Blood
Top Gun

Vacation (National Lampoon’s)
.
Those movies will be on the list unless they get voted off by multiple other geeks, but that’s only 66 movies, so we need everyone to vote on the remaining 34 movies. The movies that get the most votes will make it on the list and make it to the wallpaper. So leave your votes for movies to either be removed from the above list, or added to the list.

The Departed, Eastern Promises, The Rock, Inside Man, Ocean’s 11, and Liar Liar are all worthy movies to be on that list in my opinion.
I’ll second Eastern Promises, if only to get something by Cronenberg on there. But how about a vote for Videodrome?
btw, Scott, is the Batman on that list the one I voted for (1966) or the other one (1989)?
Please add
Gandhi
Saving Private Ryan
Ben Hur
American Beauty
Hey dude, its the 1989 version..sorry.
I third Eastern Promises, and second The Departed, I was pulling for Saving Private Ryan to get on the list as well!
Brett, I had ‘Videodrome’ on my list, but apparently was the only one … ‘Ghandi’ also made my Top 100 list … so, I vote for them to be put back in, since we now have 2 votes for each.
Shit..Forgot to put House of Sand and Fog on my list DAMMIT!
yeah!! go videodrome!!
anyone for Akira, the original japanese cut of Godzilla (Gojira), or The Thing for goodness sake?
‘Gojira’ would definitely be worthy, I love ‘The Thing’ but not sure I would include it in my top 100 of all time. As for ‘Akira’ … I purposely didn’t include animated films in my list. Not that there aren’t any worthy candidates, I just see them as being there separate category. Maybe we should make an animated top list?
what?! don’t be like the Academy, animated movies are some of the all time classics regardless of the fact that somebody drew them. Grave of the Fireflies is one of the best war films ever made, Roger Ebert will back me up on that claim. and Akira is a true classic, not to mention all that it inspired. i refute this declaration and patiently await backup on the subject!!
also, if Top Gun and fucking PLANET FUCKING TERROR are on the list, then I think John Carpenter and Rob Bottin deserve some love for The Thing. I’d give him The Thing before I gave him Halloween. and how about The Shining, dammit?
FLAME WAR!!!
Wow, I didn’t even realize Saving Private Ryan wasn’t on there… just one of those movies you automatically expect and don’t look for. That one and Schindler’s List for that matter.
It should be, an oversite in combining the lists. The shining should be up there too.
No Equillibrium ?
booooooo…..
GUN-KATA !
Agreed that there should be some Akira in there and Cronenberg as well though my vote is for The Brood. I’d also add Porky’s and Black Christmas (original) to the list.
I second Equilibrium with the greatness of Gun-Kata and also through in Ghost in the Shell and how about some Deer Hunter?
Porkys should make it, not sure about Black Christmas, or Equilibrium(although a great flick).
Black Christmas is a must – especially if you have Halloween in the mix! After all, Carpenter took Clark’s POV camera shot to the max. Add in a group of liberated women and Margot Kidder spewing some of the best lines ever and you have a must see horror classic!
Holy cripes, I just realized that An American Werewolf In London should be on here. It trumps Black Christmas AND Halloween and its not even about a holiday. I feel like half of this game is arguing things OUT of the list to make room for new suggestions, so Anchorman should probably get kicked off the list for it, funny though it may be.
also, people might take this list more seriously if we spell “Citizen Kane” correctly.
i take that back, actually, Anchorman IS pretty awesome, haha. and we’ve only got like 60 items on the list anyway.
I agree with most of the list, especially The Shining, but how come Vertigo isn’t on there!
Um… please, please take a look at the following, as many of these films don’t just deserve to be on the list, but some really need to be a part of the list. I mean, damn, if we’re putting ‘Big’ on the list, surely we could consider a film like ‘Apocalypse Now.’ Just sayin’ is all.

Good Stuff btw!
DAMN..I forgot to put City of Lost Children on my list, Ron Perlman is freakin amazing in that!
all right, now I’m seeing discrepancies in the original list counts. I voted for Burden of Dreams and so did Travis, so why isn’t it on the 2 or more list? Same thing with Touch of Evil. Same thing with Blade Runner. SAME THING WITH ROCKY!! I’M CALLING FOUL!!
likewise, thanks to Nick’s new votes: Vertigo, Space: 2001, Do The Right Thing, and The Day The Earth Stood Still from Nick’s list are also on my list, so they ought to hit 2 vote category now as well. Not to mention Aguirre and Leon and others from Travis’ list…
oh, and Brazil. i’m not joking around here.
This comments section is gettin’ pretty sexy.
and, as a side note, did anyone read the aintitcool article regarding the unearthed and COMPLETE CUT of Metropolis? Ho-lee shit…

I too had 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rocky, The Day the Earth Stood Still
300 and Fight Club? I think those 2 are on the wrong list….they belong on the list of 100 most homo-erotic movies of all time.
and where is The Karate Kid? sweep the leg!!
Not the biggest fan of ’300′ I am … but, ‘Fight Club’ was great! ‘The Karate Kid’ also was good, but not top 100 material (IMO) … “Wax On, Wax Off” … this is why these lists are so darn tough! There’s a ton of films I struggled with but ultimately left off the list. The big question is, how do you determine what makes the list and what doesn’t? I ended up basing mine on what films had the most influence and/or impact on me, combined with their level of achievement and how well they stand up to my standards of repeated viewing. Gee, that sounds more complicated than it actually is …
The list is being redone, we will be including any unanimous votes, and anything that received 3 or more nods. Once we get that done we will repost the list and bash it out on the remainings..
Also, Panda Huger…Fight club is one of the greatest movies of our generation..by OUR i dont mean YOUR because you must be way too old to appreciate that damn movie.
The Karate Kid is a great flick and would probably make a bunch of lists for people that arent that into film(like i assume you are for even suggesting it).
Panda hugger….No Karate and no Rudy!!!!
hahaha Panda Hugger, we are just giving you a rough time!

i heart blue velvet.
the brood
naked lunch
s7ven
black hawk down
true romance
devils advocate
how about this
i would love to argue anyone that thinks black hawk down shouldn’t be on the list. Probably one of the greatest modern warfare movies that will ever be made.
i think Apocalypse Now should deserve to be on the list before saving private ryan. If saving private ryan was to be on the list. My argument for that would be Marlon Brando, robert duvall, harrison ford, and martin sheen. One of the great Vietnam era movies. I get that Saving private Ryan is one of the great WWII movies but Band of Brothers will always trump Saving Private Ryan. Plus I think the movie get too much hype due to its opening scene. Not saying its a bad movie I just think Apocalypse now is one that no one should miss.
the offical list is in the hands of the man..(Scott)
71 films made the cut (3of7 votes from the Editors)
There are about 60 films battling for the final 29 spots.
wew….alot of movies!
Panda Hugger Rudy ..one vote from your sis…wouldn’t make the top 500…. Number 1 rule..you don’t diss Fight Club!
I thought you guys were movie geeks….. with one hundred spots the was not enough places for:
The Wild Bunch
scanners
MenaceIIsociety
Malcolm X
Boyz in the Hood
She’s Gotta Have it
Do the Right Thing
reservoir Dogs
Bonnie and Clyde
Heavy Traffic
48 hrs
Slapshot
Cool Hand Luke
Once upon a Time in the West
fistful of Dollars
Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
Jason and the Argosnauts
On the Waterfront
You have a top 100 list with no Peckinpah, Ray Harryhaussen, Akira kurosawa, Ralph Bakshi, Walter Hill, Michael Mann, Richard Donner and only 1 sergio Leone. Where are the good Blaxploitation (Shaft, Superfly, Claudine, Education Of Sonny Carson, Lady sings the Blues)or any of the old American International stuff. I will commend you guys for not including (The Departed). This is the most undeserving Best picture. It was a shot by shot remake with one of those 1950′s hollywood endings were the bad guy has to get his in the end. Watch (Infernal Affairs).
ok, a lot of people with some good suggestions here but i just have to say Dawn of the Dead? Please?
and none of that remake malarky of course! haha
John Carpenter's The Thing, Ichi The Killer, Suspiria, Boondock Saints, Seven, The Warriors, 28 Days Later, The Big Lebowski, The River's Edge, Pieces, Zombie, Rear Window, Psycho, El Topo, Hackers, Sonatine, Battle Royale, Requiem For A Dream, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Akira.
