‘Twilight’ hype … still out of control?

I posted about this movie back in May, and needless to say that it got some people a little worked up about “their” movie… However I think that we need to revisit this again.
‘Twilight’ fans are almost like Harry Potter fans, except older and way more pissed off. If they read anything negative about the movie..they will find you and attempt to burn you at the stake. Just check out the 945 comments that MTV movie blog received about the EW Cover(picture above). They almost seem like the new breed of defensive Star Wars geeks, or Trekkies. This is the newest phenomenon, and its getting a bit out of control. They kind of feel that since they are such huge fans of the book, the movie wont disappoint them.
What do you guys think about this? Have you guys read the book? Are you excited for the movie without having read the book?

The issue of EW that just came out was what prompted me to buy the first book. I’ll have to admit I was completely oblivious to the series. I swear I don’t live under a rock I simply don’t follow books… but ofcourse as soon as it is being made into a movie I take notice. Well, I read the first book in one evening. I was very impressed. It’s not dense reading, it is aimed at teens so it isn’t the most complicated book in the world, but it was very engaging and the plot and characters moved me. I hurried out the next day and bought the next two books. I may like the books, but I don’t intend on rushing out and jumping on the fandom bandwagon, I just don’t roll like that. I will see the movie… probably on DVD cause I don’t know who would go with me… but I must say the teaser preview I saw on line looked kinda cheep. It felt more like a television show then a movie. I understand the budget was relatively low. We’ll see. Long story short: I recommend the books, but I think the hype is a little bit ridiculous… this isn’t groundbreaking stuff, as one reviewer said “it’s kind of like Dawson’s Creek with vampires.”
Agreed on how the clips, particularly a recently released one with added FX, looked laughably bad but I’ll be there, opening night, even if by myself. I think you’ll enjoy the other two, they’re great reads. I think Meyers herself said that she wasn’t a great writer but a great storyteller and I agree with that sentiment 100%.
The books are well written for the age group they’re aimed at, and yes I own all three so far because I’m an avid reader. I hope the movie is at least halfway decent but I’m not holding my breath because no matter how hard you try the book is always better than the movie.
I’m a fan of the books, but I have NO expectations that the movie is going to be good. No stars, cheap budget…there’s really no way this can be good, especially judging by the sneak peek trailer. They are pumping it out to cash in on the fan base, not to make a great movie. If only Peter Jackson or Speilberg wanted to make it…
