Top 10 Baseball Movies of All-Time …

By  |

In tribute to the recently finished All Star game, we are giving you guys the top 10 Baseball movies of all time, as voted on by the movie geeks. We took our team and had to go back and count a couple of times to see how many movies that Kevin Costner starred in about baseball! Luckily only 2 made the list! If you want to see the list, click on the read more link… Enjoy:

10. Eight Men Out

Travis: ‘Eight Men Out’ serves as one of the most important baseball movies ever made, due to its subject matter. Considered to be one of, if not the worst scandal in all of professional sports (pre-‘roids), the film tells of the 1919 World Series when the Chicago Black Sox threw the series for a size-able payout. The movie first introduced me to one of my baseball heroes, Shoeless Joe Jackson.

09. Mr Baseball

Scott: What do you get when you mix Tom Selleck when he was still rocking the ‘stache, a washed up baseball player, and Japanese Baseball? One of the best Baseball comedies of all time! Tom Selleck plays Jack Elliot who gets traded from the Yankees to the Chunichi Dragons, even though he “led the team in 9th inning doubles in the month of August”! He moves to Japan and gets accustomed to baseball in a different form.

08. The Sandlot

Scott: This movie came out back when I was still playing little league at age 11, so I instantly loved it. The story follows Scott Smalls, a nerdy kid who moved to a new neighborhood and dreams of making friends and playing baseball. Dennis Leary plays the step-dad who is struggling to connect with his step son. Smalls stumbles upon a baseball field that is occupied by a young team of players and eventually the best player on the team Rodriquez takes him under his wing, and teaches him how be a baseball player. Many hi-jinx ensue and they have an encounter with a massive dog, and a baseball legend played by James Earl Jones.

07. Pride of the Yankees

Travis: ‘Pride of the Yankees’ is not the only “classic” baseball movie, but is perhaps the greatest. Jimmy Stewart Gary Cooper is perfect as the immortal legend Lou Gehrig in his rise to baseball fame and his heart-breaking career-ending battle with ALS. The movie serves as a great historical piece about that era in baseball and even features the real-life Babe Ruth who plays himself in the film.

06. The Natural

Travis: ‘The Natural’ stars Robert Redford as a fictional young farm-boy who becomes a baseball prodigy after his father dies. He sports his own hand-made bat that his father gave him, made from a tree struck down by lightning. In his beginnings, he even strikes out Babe Ruth in a casual bet. Redford does a fine job as the ballplayer with heart who overcomes multiple tragedies to become a beloved sports icon, even if he wasn’t real.

05. The Bad News Bears(1976)

Travis: ‘Bad News Bears’ is the quintessential movie about little league baseball. Most of us who played can relate to the antics of playing an organized team sport that is filled mostly with kids that either can’t play or who’re forced to play by their parents. We also relate to the rival winning team of bullies with the a**hole coach. Walter Mattheau is brilliant as the drunken loser coach that manages to turn his life and the team’s season around with near miraculous results.

04. Major League

A young Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes before he started getting big to play a comic book hero, Rene Russo, Corbin Bernson, and few of “Oh I know that guy” mix it up and one of the best baseball comedies ever made. The Indians get some new ownership with the owner marries a stripper, dies on the honeymoon and she gets the team. She attempts to move the team somewhere warmer, so she puts together the worst team she could find but they in turn stick it to the “man” and win.

03. Bull Durham

Travis: ‘Bull Durham’ is my preferred Costner baseball flick. He plays the aging and wise minor league catcher who’s had his shot at the “bigs” but now must mold the wild and undisciplined Tim Robbins into a first-class pitcher. Sarandon plays the smart and sexy baseball groupie torn between her old flame (Costner) and the hot young stud (Robbins). This movie has so many memorable scenes and ranks on the top of my multiple viewings list.

02. Field of Dreams

One of the 34 Baseball movies that Kevin Costner has under his belt. This time he hears a voice from his cornfield that tells him “If you build it, they will come”. So he sets out to build one of the greatest baseball fields ever constructed..on his farm. Ray Liotta and James Earl Jones show up on this classic old school baseball movie.

01. A League of their Own

Weird that the #1 baseball movie on our list is actually about an all women’s baseball league huh? No that is not a slight against women, or Charles… but women typically play softball. Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty and Jon Lovitz team up for a heart warming tale of an alcoholic, former baseball player/coach that takes a team of all women baseball players scouted from all over the country while their men are away at war.
