More bad news on ‘Day the Earth Stood Still’ ?

I’ve already basically written off the remake of ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ as a failure (I’ll let you know for sure once I’ve seen it), with Keanu Reeves starring and the fact that it’s a remake of a classic well-made sci-fi film to boot. After seeing the first trailer, I’m that much more confident that the movie will fall on its face. Now, thanks to Ain’t It Cool News, we get a “possible” glimpse of the new Gort … or, well … the robot formerly known as Gort. Apparently, in early script reviews by AICN, Gort was no longer being called Gort. What? Bastards! To make matters worse, they came across a concept sketch of one of the possible “Gort” redesigns and it rather disappointing. Of course, we can’t know for sure if this is the actual design used, but considering it came from the website of concept artist Lorin Wood (who’s working on the film), it does give us an idea of what they’re toying with … failure, in my opinion.

  1. You got to have faith, Travis; I do.

  2. Hi,

This is Lorin, the artist responsible for the design above. Here’s the facts: I worked as a previz artist on the film, and during some down time, myself and co-worker decided to do some sketches of how we’d like to see Gort. This design doesn’t represent anything involved with the design of the film; just a sketch I did for fun. It is not official by any stretch of the imagination. So, please feel free to spread that around. They kind of cobbled together the story and posted it

  3. Lorin, thanks for the insider news. I figured this wasn’t the design, but I also figured the design is likely to stray from the original. Any idea on whether that has any truth? I realize you’re probably not at liberty to say…

  4. You clearly already made up your mind about this movie, and somehow “figured out” everything about it (never mind that just a few lines above you couldn’t even decide if there was going to be a Gort in the first place… but I guess that’s what happens when you listen to biased new sources). So, why ask for insider information? So you can twist it around to fit your negative stand bundle?

  5. Well, I really can’t comment further about the film as I was only involved at the very beginning. The film industry is very compartmentalized (unless you’re the guy holding all the $$$). If the director says he wanted to stay true to the original, then that’s probably what happened.

  6. “I figured this wasn’t the design, but I also figured the design is likely to stray from the original. ”

You know what else you can “figure”? Ain’t It Cool News gets all their info on this movie from half-assed “sources” that have given them wrong art, wrong info, and the wrong script. Also, if you’ve watched the trailer (as in, actually watched it, not just started watching it and then immediately started rabidly scribbling your geek ‘opinion’ half-way through it), you’d see there is a shot of Gort that 1) looks nothing like this drawing, and 2) resembles the original.

But wait, you are already smart enough to “figure” that, so here is what else you can do: 1) stop twisting information on a movie just so you can bash it, and 2) shut the fuck up.

PS: Saying “with Keanu Reeves starring” is not enough of an explanation of why something will be a failure. There are plenty of us who like him, who are not scared to say it, and who have made up our own minds about him without letting those with um, “cred” like YOU (lol) tell us otherwise.

    So please, stop embarrassing yourself.

  7. Once again the negativity is rampant and unjustified. As we’ve stated before, this site is for fun and we’re merely speaking our opinions. If you want to love the film before it comes out, great! You have that right as much as I have the right to hate the film before it comes out. Get over it! As for the concept art, it was merely a talking point regarding what the design may be. I never said it “was” the design. I did not notice the very brief clip of Gort’s head in the trailer when I watched it on YouTube, but did in the theatrical viewing I saw prior to ‘Hancock’ … So, yes it appears as though Gort may resemble the original. ["I’ve already basically written off the remake of ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’ as a failure (I’ll let you know for sure once I’ve seen it)"] You like to bash people for making statement that weren’t made. In addition, everything in this post was either shared “news” from another site or strictly my opinion. As far as who’s embarrassing themselves, posting comments such as yours [Amanda} is simply making yourself look childish.

  8. “Once again the negativity is rampant and unjustified.”

    Back at’ya.

And nobody is talking about loving the film before it comes out. Apparently, the only person around here displaying some kind of strong emotion towards a film not seen, is you. Only it’s more in the opposite pole of the love/hate continuum. Or something like that.
Anyway, for somebody who is trying to be a reviewer, even for fun sake, that does not seem to be a very… commendable and credible attitude.
