You call yourself a movie geek?

Last night at the ‘Wanted’ screening a great debate struck out with a few movie geeks, and in my opinion there are certain movies that a “Movie Geek” need to have in their arsenal. One of the “Movie Geeks” that posts here claimed last night to have never seen ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Harry Potter’, and also chimed in and stated that ‘Braveheart’ was overrated. Now I can forgive the never seeing ‘Harry Potter’, but as a fan of cinema and to garner a “Movie Geek” title this is an unforgivable offense. Now, I want to poll our readers and other fellow movie geeks to see what you guys think about this..leave your comments below:

Should we revoke his geek card until he has seen the movies and passes a little quiz? or Should we just let it slide? Everyone chime in…

  1. @ Michelle: “Do I get geek points for owning the Criterion dvd of Armageddon?”

    Ummm. NO!?!

Criterion was in relapse when that happened. It’s the only explanation I can think of. Of the two Bay films in the collection, The Rock is the better of the two.

  2. While I did enjoy ‘The Rock’ I even question its inclusion, especially when you consider the nuber of far more deserving films not yet included. As for ‘Armageddon’ … I scoff at the very mention of it as a Criterion member! BTW, I know I’ll probably catch flack for this, but I also question the inclusion of ‘Chasing Amy’ … again, I enjoyed the movie but if they wanted to induct Kevin Smith into Criterion immortality, ‘Clerks’ should have been the film to get that treatment!

  3. Yessika says:

I also don’t understand why Armageddon makes the Criterion list, then again so does Beauty and the Beast. And while I grew up loving Disney movies and since I’m a girl I’m socially inclined to love it, I don’t think it should be on the list either. If it’s standing next to Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet on this list I have to question their method of selection…just a thought though…haha

  4. Charles says:

Like I said there are alot of movies on the Criterion Collection List that could be argued as for being on it. I can name off a hell of alot of films that would raise eyebrows that should be on and shouldn’t be on!

to be a movie geek you have to have seen at least 3 Ralph Bakshi movies, know your Walter Hill from your Peckinpah, love subtitles (remember subtitles are your friend), know David keith from Keith David, Have attended at least two midnight shows( Rocky Horror, A.W. Frankenstien in 3D etc, not the early screening of a new movie, and realize that “if a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his ass a hoppin’”

  6. I just think that is preposterous

  7. alejandra fitzsimons says:

can't think of a 3rd Bakshi' s…surrender my card too?

  8. I´m according with the next sentence, cited in the original post of this page.

"Now I can forgive the never seeing ‘Harry Potter (HP)’, but as a fan of cinema and to garner a “Movie Geek” title this is an unforgivable offense".

So the question is… try to forget the bad and worse examples in films, like (LOTR) (unnamed, of course) and the same HP… the worst story, i think but highly commercial.

I think to consider a REAL… BUT SERIOUSLY REAL MOVIE GEEK (remember the name of thispost, you call yourself a moviegeek), And call by him/her self A TRUTH MOVIE GEEK… at least, he/she, must see some obligatorious movies, in the history of cinema: (and of course, not trash cinema, like LOTR and HP and commercial sagas)

    1.Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982)
    2. Les temps Moderns (Charlie Chaplin, 1936)
    3.The Cube (Vincenzo Natalli, 1998)
    4. Zatoichi (Takeishi Kitano, 2003)
    5. Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
    6. V for Vendetta (James Mc Teigh, 2005)
    7. Batoru Rowaiaru (Kenji Fukasaku, 2000)
    8. Sin City, Frannk mIller, Robert Rodríguez, 2005)
    9. The Fight Club (David Fincher, 1999)

Special mention to Matrix (The main, or I), by The Wachofsky Brothers

and… what about Watchmen… it´s probably and could be in this list?

WE CAN CREATE AN MOVIE GENRE… of course… his name will be… MOVIE GEEK

But we need criterious… non specific inherited to technology, but yes, WIDE CRITERIOUS.

    SO, go ahead.
