Discuss: ‘The Happening’ … the greatest B-Movie ever?

Say what you will about the man’s movies, one thing that has been gradually growing out of check since M. Night Shayamalan’s first film is the director’s inflated sense of self. From the way he describes his own work to his gratuitous cameos in his films, Night has been walking on thin ice for awhile. Now comes this newest example of narcissistic hyperbole from an interview with CNN about his latest, “The Happening”:

CNN: So a lot of people are going to see this and say, “Is this an environment movie?” Are you sending an Al Gore-like message out here, or is it just a thriller?

Shyamalan: No. 1, it’s a B movie. This is the best B movie you will ever see, that’s it. That’s what this is. If there’s other things that stick to your ribs as you walk out, that’s great, but it’s supposed to be, you know, zombies eating flesh.

That’s right, M. Night has just confirmed that in his mind this

is superior to little things you might remember like

The Blob

Deathrace 2000

Escape From New York / Escape From LA

Phantasm

and so on and so on. Maybe M. Night needs a trip to his local video store to remember the difference between the true classics and his own films. Because characters in movies have been getting killed by scarier things than trees for a long time now, and furthermore

KRITES NEVER NEEDED A TWIST!

  1. As much as I did love The Happening, you do have a point. M. Night needs to humble down a bit … just like my sports stars, I prefer my filmmakers be down-to-Earth modest people. Even Tarantino, as brilliant as he is, is a humble person … until you get him talking about “the classics” … then he’s just the world’s biggest movie geek you’ll ever meet. That’s not arrogant, that’s just coolness!

  2. amen, brother.

  3. Tarantino is the worlds biggest movie geek..watch out for his guest blog coming soon..

  4. lol, i love tarantino

  5. Travis I needed some of what you were on when you saw the Happening last night at the Love Guru! Best B movie ever,PLEASE! Shymalan fans ..down! I though the film was OK..like the Village. You have a couple of classics listed in the Blog..Phantasm, Escape from NY, Death Race 2000. How about The Thing, the Blob & Trilogy of Terror. Plus I Spit on Your Grave and Bloodsucking Freaks..I always think of my mother in law when they drill into the lady’s skull strapped to an electric chair! M.Night another slice of humble pie coming right up!

  6. The Blob was the first movie I listed!

    Some more good ones are:

Blood Freak (M. Night doesn’t even have a guy with a turkeyhead beat)
    The Wizard of Gore
    Scum of the Earth
    I Drink Your Blood
    Killer Klowns From Outer Space
    Dead Alive
    Pet Sematary
    Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary
    Silver Bullet

  7. Michelle says:

You all think he needs to pacify critics?? really?? they are the ones paying him to make movies?? really??
    I-did-not-know-that
Look, if the studio whores are still lining up to bend over and distribute his movies, which ALWAYS have his name above the credits, then he can be as arrogant as he wants….they don’t care, as long as they make a profit…..like any self-respecting studio whore. The bottom line is that he is not making movies to win over the haters that don’t like him anyway…so why not thumb his nose at all of you.

  8. MARS ATTACKS is awesome too. the yodeling-driven reclamation of our planet is hilarious, popping heads and all.

  9. Uh Oh we have angered Mrs. Shymalan again!!!!

  10. Hey Mrs. Shymalan… What are your top ten B flicks or I should say your top 8 after The Happening and “Chick in the Pool” ?????

  11. Michelle says:

Keep dreaming Ram Man…Manoj’s films will never be anything but A-list….and try to get the spelling on Shyamalan correct.

    Monster Squad
    The Thing From Another World
    Army of Darkness
    Piranha
    It’s Alive
    Creature from the Black Lagoon
    Lifeforce
    John Carpenter’s Vampires
    Roger Corman’s Frankenstein Unbound
    Pitch Black
