‘Captain America’ casting news … already?!

matt and cap

I was browsing through some of the Tumblr blogs I have been following and noticed a post about Captain America casting news.

It appears Matt McConaughey is the leading candidate for the leading role! The flick is not due to be released until 2011 which means filming won’t start until 2009? maybe 2010? and Matt’s name is already being thrown around? This is some really early speculation but the site claims to have a reliable source. They also mention his physique could be Captain quality and he is popular with the ladies so they could draw in a slightly different demographic than the Cap usually draws.

What do you think? Good choice? Would someone else be better? Did anyone ever read Wizard magazine back in the day when they had the Casting Call section? They would “cast” a movie version of a comic book picking the best thespians for the roles. I picked Patrick Stewart to play Professor X and I was right! My friend and I thought Bruce Willis would have been a great Wolverine.

What do you think? Matt McConaughey as Captain America? Who else could/should play the role?

  1. I would say, giving the beneift of the doubt, Ryan Reynolds would pull it off a hell of a lot better than M&M. Ryan hasn’t had a real serious movie other than the last Blade, and even then he was still the comic relief in it. But he was buff as hell in it and I think, given the chance for a serious role, he could pull it off better than McConaughey. Or maybe Josh Duhamel, he had a pretty good showing in Transformers.

  2. Matthew Mcconaughey is a good choice but what about Ryan Renolds???

  3. Travis says:

Personally, I think Reynolds is perfectly cast as Deadpool in the coming Wolverine films. Deadpool’s character has that kind of sarcastic humor that Reynolds is known for. As for Captain America, he’s a very serious, straight-laced military type hero … I just don’t picture Reynolds doing him justice. Then again, I’m also not suggesting McConaughey is a good choice either.

  4. David Wright says:

I’d sooner die than see either Reynolds or McConaughey as Captain America.

  5. *To Julie*
I would rather watch security camera footage from Neverland Ranch for all of eternity than see M&M be Captain America. He should stick to the romantic comedies in which he performs average at best in. When it comes to serious movies he just doesn’t make the cut. His best serious role would be either in Reign of Fire or Contact, with Amistad right behind; but even then, those performances don’t carry the kind of weight with them as a comic book hero does, and a slightly above average performace just wouldn’t do nearly enough justice for Captain America. McConaughey would be a terrible choice to try and fill the suit, and I can’t find any actors that immediately come to mind for the role.

    *For everyone else*
Even though he already pulled his turn in a comic book movie, I think Thomas Jane would be a solid choice. I would take him over Reynolds or McConaughey. I would say Jane would be my current top pick coming to mind. And, even though I would never see him doing this (namely because he would like to believe he would have the good sense not to), Mark Wahlberg could be an interesting choice but not one I would want to see.

But if the past is any representation of casting choices, I wouldn’t be surprised with the studios holding on with McConaughey or going with someone like Paul Walker or Vin Diesel or Keanu Reeves. Whoa.

  6. Andrew says:

wow. The only name on this list that has been remotely interesting to me is Mark Wahlberg.
McConaughey is a hearthrob, Paul Walker Blows, Vin Diesel is a short guy, and Keanu Reeves is probably my least favorite actor in the world.
I dont really see Wahlberg as a superhero though.
I’d personally prefer a Matt Damon myself.

  7. Trevor says:

Ryan Reynolds will be THE perfect Deadpool. Take Van Wilder, his character from Blade 3, throw on a mask and give him a sword and guns and that is Deadpool. One of my favorite character.

Remember, Captain America is from the 1940′s so we need a guy who looks like he is from the 40′s and still wants to kick Hitlers butt. Depending on the story line the Cap should still be a young age? The super soldier serum slows his aging right? Or at least he was frozen in the Arctic and thawed out later and didn’t age. And he has blonde hair and blue eyes?

Scott and I discussed this a little today. It probably needs to be a new actor to Hollywood. If it was Damon I would see Bourne and not Steve Rogers. If it was McConaughey I would think to myself ” thats what I like about these high school girls, I get older and they all stay the same age.”

Either way, it will be debated for years to come.
